Women's Health and Equal Rights Initiative (WHER)

Economic Well-being
Introduction

Women’s Health and Equal Rights Initiative is a civil society organisation working to advance and promote the well-being and equal rights of lesbian, bisexual and queer (LBQ) women in Nigeria.

Who

The Women’s Health and Equal Rights (WHER) Initiative is a feminist, LBQ-led non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation established with the aim of providing a platform for the promotion of the well-being and protection of the rights of LBQ women in Nigeria through advocacy, education, empowerment, and psychosocial support.

Why

They use their platform to address the health and psychosocial effects of the dual discrimination (homophobia and sexism) faced by LBQ women in Nigeria and their under-representation in the LGBT movement in Nigeria.

Vision

WHER Initiative envisions a society that respects, accepts and promotes the self-realisation of women and girls regardless of sexual orientation, status, disability and age.

Wher’s aims and objectives

The strategic directions of WHER are categorized into five thematic areas of work:

  • Advocacy
  • Education
  • Empowerment
  • Psychosocial support
  • Research and Documentation
